Build an advanced GPS-equipped physical-gaming tag system

If you love gaming but want to get off the sofa and bring the action into the real world, this is the ultimate hands-on experience. At our Physical Gaming Camp, you’ll design and build your very own next-generation outdoor gaming system — a fully working laser-tag style setup with GPS, sound, and screen-based game-lay.
You’ll start by assembling and soldering your own physical gaming devices — each featuring a high-resolution colour display, sound system, and GPS location tracking. Once built, you’ll program them in Python to create sound effects, design interfaces, and develop exciting, location-based games that blend the digital and physical worlds.
From classic laser tag battles to GPS treasure hunts and even virtual creature-catching games, you’ll invent new ways to play — and take home a complete four-player system to continue developing and gaming with friends.

Take home your entire four-player physical gaming system — complete with four taggers, four vests, and all your customised code and games to keep playing long after camp ends
Learn practical electronics, soldering, and Python programming while exploring GPS tracking, sound design, and user-interface coding
Create and code your own real-world gaming experiences — from laser battles and GPS-based treasure hunts to exploration and adventure games
This course takes gaming to a whole new level — beyond the screen and into the real world. You’ll start by constructing your own multi-player physical gaming system, complete with four taggers and four wearable vests. Each tagger includes a full-colour touchscreen, speaker system, and GPS tracking module.
Once built, you’ll dive into coding using Python — programming your own visual interfaces, game sounds, and interactive features. You’ll learn how to use GPS data to create location-based games, where zones and objectives exist in the real world. Capture the flag, treasure hunts, or virtual creature tracking — the possibilities are endless.
With guidance from your tutor, you’ll prototype and play-test several game modes, then design one or more of your own original ideas. Whether it’s an outdoor adventure game or a high-tech team challenge, you’ll take home one of the most sophisticated consumer laser-tag systems ever built — designed and coded entirely by you.
Building your system
Start the week by assembling your own physical gaming setup — soldering components, connecting sensors, and building your taggers and vests ready for coding.
Programming and Testing
Use Python to program your screens, sound effects, and GPS tracking, then test your devices in real-world gameplay. You’ll see your code come to life as you play your first games.
